Falcon Update (posted on May 28, 2008)
During the banding of the falcon chicks on May 14, 2008 it was discovered that there are new parents at the 55 Water Street site. The male Black 6 over Red 7 was banded at the New York City Riverside Church site on May 30, 2002. He was named Jasper by the staff at 55 Water Street. The female 04 Black over Green Z was banded on May 11, 2002 on the Goliath Crane at the Quincy shipyard just south of Boston, Massachusetts. The fifth grade class of Mrs. Patricia Miller of the J. Larry Newton School of Fairhope Alabama named her Jubilee.

Jubilee is a term used locally for a natural phenomenon that occurs only on the shores of Mobile Bay, Alabama. During a jubilee, blue crabs, shrimp, flounder, stingrays, and eels swarm towards the shore in such numbers that the shallow water near the land seems to boil with life. People living near the shore ring bells and call out to alert their neighbors so that everyone can rush down to the water with washtubs, gigs, and nets, and gather a bountiful-- and easily reaped--harvest of seafood. As jubilees only happen on warm summer nights, often in the pre-dawn hours, the event takes on the aspect of a joyous community beach party, with lights shining into the Bay water.

Great news everyone!
We are excited to learn that an egg has hatched!
Around 10am this morning, a tenant in the building who had been watching the live birdcam from the television in the lobby witnessed the event and notified us.

During the incubation J. Jaie had been taking turns with the father, sitting on the eggs or watching guard from the top of the shelter.
She continues to roll the eggs around in an effort to assist her young falcons hatch.

We are sorry to admit that we have no additional information about the father at this time; and we can only assume that Jack has long since gone to that proverbial ‘large hunting ground in the skies’ since he was absent last year and has not been spotted recently.

Stay tuned and we’ll keep you posted on more falcon updates!

Good Afternoon, everyone!

We are pleased to announce that while many of us were out enjoying the St. Patrick’s Day festivities, J. Jaie had returned to 55 Water Street and was busy laying her first egg of 2008!

The second egg arrived two days later (3/19), the third egg just two days after that (3/21), and our fourth was laid on 3/23.

J. Jaie has been sitting quietly on her eggs since March 24th, and we expect that within approximately 32 days the incubation period will end and the young birds will hatch.

The father is yet to be identified as it is difficult for our engineers to precisely see the tracking numbers on his foot; but once this tag information is discovered it will be passed along to the Department of Environmental Protection, whereby we will learn more details about the father’s birthplace, his age, and the different places he’s been sighted.

Our live webcam is up and running, and will be available 7 days a week for all in need of their falcon-fix. Also, please feel free to drop an e-mail (gkammel@55water.com) and share your own stories and/or sightings of the birds’ activities-- after the eggs have hatched, expect quite a bit more activity than as is at present!

We are proud to bring you more updates, and we look forward to watching our falcon family grow!
